Motorcycle safety clothing, specifically helmets, are obligatory in most countries. Whilst in the United Kingdom, motorcycle helmets are the only mandated protection, most riders choose to wear motorcycle clothing that has been designed to offer more elementary protection than conventional clothing. Protective motorcycle clothing may include certain types of jackets, boots, gloves and trousers. Jackets and trousers worn by motorcyclists are typically made of strong nylon textiles or leather, with optional additonal protection panels made of tougher abbrasion resistant materials such as Kevlar. Motorcycle Jackets and trousers may also include additional padding and plastic armour inserts at vunerable areas such as shoulders, knees and elbows. Some motorcycle jackets also provide optional insertion areas in the back of the clothing in which spine protectors can be inserted. Not all motorcycle riders like to wear so much protection as it can restrict movement, comfort and also increase the temperature inside the clothing. Better quality, and subsequently more expensive garmets have breathable inner layers to regulate the tempearture inside.
Motorcycle boots are specifcally manuufactured for riding a bike and often include addtional reinforcements to the toe and ankle sections. Boots soles often are shapped to fit comfortably on the foot pegs and are constructed from leather and/or waterproof textiles.
Motorcycle gloves are made of leather and/or waterproof textiles. Most gloves offer additional protection against abrasion with additional sections made of Kevlar or inserted plastic armour. It must be remembered by the rider that motorcycle clothing is designed to reduce abrasion and minor impact injuries incurred by falling off or injury from loose objects and litter on the roads, Motorcycle clothing is not designed to protect against impact from other vehicles or riders being dismounted at high speed.
